Nokia My Commute for Nokia Drive 3.0 hits the road

Nokia My Commute, which is set to be a key feature of Nokia Drive has started to rollout. Germany is the first European country, but it’s thought the Uk, Italy and Russia will be getting the service update soon.

Nokia My Commute is set to be one of the new major improvements to the service as it not only helps you get to where you’re going a lot easier, it also learns about your driving preferences the more you use it.

Nokia Germany has announced that My Commute has started to rollout there and that we can expect it to appear in the UK, Russia and Italy shortly. It seems the service is set up using the settings screen within Nokia Drive itself.

My Commute within Nokia Drive 3.0 works by checking your most regular routes taken, these could be the morning and evening commute home, the school run, or even the most frequent shops you head out too. It then taps into live traffic updates to help you make the journey in the most stress free and uncluttered way possible.

It seems the rollout of My Commute for Nokia Drive is dictated by the traffic information available in countries around the world. According to the guys over at AAWP, the countries that could possibly benefit from My Commute include, ‘Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Greece, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Luxembourg, Mexico, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the UAE.’

Get a feel for Nokia’s super sensitive touch displays

Hai friends today here i am going to explore the best quality of touch screen that is non other than Nokia Lumia 920.

We love our smartphones so much that we don’t just use them; we touch, swipe, tap and pinch them. They’re very human gestures and it is one reason why we have become so attached to these devices. They’re playful and easy to use.

Nokia is now taking this relationship even further with new super sensitive touch displays.

This new ability to use the touch screen with your nails, or even with your gloves on, is the biggest leap forward for capacitive touchscreens since multi-touch gestures were introduced.

Super sensitive touch technology will be featured first in the PureMotion HD+ display of the Nokia Lumia 920 and the ClearBlack display of the Nokia Lumia 820.

As Nokia’s senior vice-President of Smart Devices, Kevin Shields, said at the launch of the new Windows Phone 8 smartphones:

“Nokia has been a leader in display technology, and we are setting a new standard with Super Sensitive Touch technology on the Nokia Lumia 920 and Nokia Lumia 820.”

Nails & gloves

Using a normal touchscreen is extremely tricky if you’ve got long nails – you need to angle your finger carefully. Neither can you use a pen or wear gloves.

Nokia has been working for some time – and with different partners – on getting around these problems, and were finally able to make the final leap thanks to some new hardware innovations from Synaptics. 

Nokia’s super sensitive touch displays now allows for a wonderful touchscreen user interface, regardless of the input method. Right now, there is nothing else on the market that offers the same experience.

Adaptive technology

“The technology is adaptive so it reacts to any conductive object that is touching the screen,” explains Senior Technology Manager Jussi Ropo who has worked on super sensitive touch technology. 

“In other words, whether you are using it with gloves or a nail or stylus, it will automatically adjust the sensitiveness to provide the best possible touch screen experience.”

It should also be stressed that super sensitive touch technology does not make the screen more fragile, affect the water resistance or increase the likelihood of coins or keys in your pocket accidentally making calls on your behalf.

Super sensitive touch will make a big difference, not just for people with long nails or when you are wearing gloves but it enhances the whole touchscreen experience for everyone.

“What has made this possible? You need a lot of experience working with capacitive touch to be able do this. I would say it is a combination of the new hardware and the way it’s built into the phone but even more it is about knowing how to use it,” says Jussi.

Nokia gave birth to the idea of super sensitive touch displays, and then with help from component suppliers, they have now been able to fine-tune and perfect it.

From the lab: Lumia 920 low-light shootout with Nokia 808, iPhone 5, HTC One X and Galaxy S III

It looks like Nokia's controversial marketing move, which involved using pro DSLRs to "simulate" low-light shooting, was even less necessary than the smartphone maker may have thought. During our visit to the company's Tampere, Finland research and development complex, we were given access to a comprehensive testing suite, enabling us to shoot with a Lumia 920 prototype and a handful of competing products in a controlled lighting environment. Technicians dimmed the lights and let us snap a static scene with each handset at just 5 lux -- a level on par with what you may expect on a dimly lit city street in the middle of the night. The 920 took the cake, without question, but the iPhone didn't fare too poorly itself, snatching up nearly as much light as the Nokia device. The 808 PureView also performed quite well, but the HTC One X and Samsung Galaxy S III yielded unusable results.

It's one thing to snag proper exposure, though -- capturing sharp details with little noise and superior color balance is an entirely different beast, and the Lumia managed to do just that, as you'll see in our 100-percent-view shots further on. Later in the evening we hit the streets of Helsinki for a real-world shootout. The 920 did present some issues with exaggerated shake and other rapid movements, but it offered up excellent results overall, even in scenes that were too dark for us to make out any details with our own eyes. Our nighttime shoot can be found in the gallery below, followed by plenty of comparison photos after the break.

To ensure consistency, we set all of the smartphones to auto shooting mode, with our trusted senior mobile editor Myriam Joire behind the wheel. She matched up framing and held each device perfectly still -- she describes the process described in the video below.

Then, we scaled each shot to 620 pixels wide (to fit right here) and included a 100-percent cropped view in the lower left corner. We know you might want to examine each image yourself, though, so we're including the original files at the source link at the bottom of this page.

First up is the Lumia 920, which offered the most even exposure of all of the devices we tested. Admittedly, the shot has a yellow cast, but given the dim conditions, it's certainly acceptable.

Next up is the Nokia 808 PureView, which did a fantastic job compared to the other handsets, but required a longer exposure and lost significant color detail. It also has a heavy magenta cast -- still, a commendable performance.

The iPhone was also a solid runner-up with this test -- it didn't perform as well in even dimmer light, as we experienced when capturing images from a dark rooftop late at night, but it did yield decent shots in the lab. Even so, the frame is underexposed, includes a heavy orange cast and the 100-percent view is heavily pixelated and noticeably soft.

Finally, the Samsung Galaxy S III just barely squeezed by, snapping only the brightest elements. All in all, it really won't do.

A few hours later, we hit the streets of Helsinki for a shoot under the stars (or, well, under the clouds). We found a rather dim spot that worked well for a second comparison, which you can see just below. The Lumia and iPhone may look like they offer on-par image quality, but the latter device had more than its fair share of noise output, while the shot from Nokia's phone was much cleaner. The 808 was quite dark in normal shooting mode (seen below), but performed better with the ISO bumped to 1600, which we opted not to include considering that not all of the cameras offered this feature. The One X snap was too dark to be usable, while you can just barely make out the boat in the Galaxy S III's.

The recently unveiled Nokia Lumia 920 and Lumia 820 are shaping up to be two of the hottest smartphones of the season, but until now we didn't know much on their availability and pricing. Now, that questions finally got its their answers.

In Germany, the Lumia 920 will retail for €649 ($836), while the Lumia 820 will go for €499 ($645). However, if you are living in Italy, you can grab the Lumia 920 for €50 less at €599 ($771). The pricing there for the Lumia 820 remains unchanged.

The smartphones are also up for pre-order in Russia, where eager customers will have to chunk in 24,990 rubles ($801) for the Lumia 920 and 19,990 rubles ($640) for the Lumia 820.

Expect both Lumia devices to start shipping some time in November. In Italy, information is a bit more specific and indicates a November 12 launch from carrier TeliaSonera.

It isn't news anymore that latest "invention"; the Apple maps which comes with their new iOS6 update is appalling and quite frankly it is unusable. I already have a couple of iPhone4 friends who are asking me for advise between android and windows phone as they are prepared to switch and of course you know my response :) and they did too.

The bad news is iOS6 and Apple's map app is horrible, the good news however is that iPhone users can use Nokia's effective maps system from their browser. Yes, Nokia's browser map is 200% better and more efficient that Apple maps.

Free music comes to your Lumia family

“Its Rocking” in the Free World of Nokia Music

Imagine an application that brings access to a vast catalogue of 17 million songs, available to listen to online and offline, and ad free without ever having to sign up or pay a monthly fee? That application is here.

It’s Nokia Music, which launched exclusively for Nokia Lumia in the United States a couple of weeks ago, and will feature prominently on the forthcoming Windows Phone 8 devices like the Nokia Lumia 920 and NokiaLumia 820 smartphones.

While eager Windows Phone 8 fanciers will have to wait a little while longer to access the app, owners of the existing Lumia devices can download the free app today from the Windows Phone Marketplace, within App Highlights.

Once you open the app from the Nokia Lumia 900, 800 or 710 you’ll notice that you’re not asked to sign up for an account. The listening can begin immediately, without handing over personal information or credit card details.

You’ll see from the Nokia Music homescreen a series of menu options. One is My Music, which takes you to the tunes you have stored locally on your phone or the files that you have purchased or added to the device from your computer. Any music you purchase using this app will end up here too.

Mixing It Up

Selecting Mix Radio instantly opens up a world of pre-curated playlists from a large array of genres. You can select from Bestsellers, Decade Mixes and much, much more. There’s even playlists from artists like Green Day, Rihanna and Lana Del Rey, with more playlists by new artists being added all the time. 

There are many music streaming services that offer offline playlists for those times when connectivity or monthly data allowances are at a premium. However, most of them charge a pretty penny each month for the privilege of going off the grid. 

Mix Radio allows for playlists to be made available offline free of charge or subscription. All you have to do is ‘long press’ on a playlist and select ‘Make available offline’. As the playlists are constantly evolving as the weeks go on, simply refresh them to ensure they’re perfectly up to date. You can download up to 14 hours to listen to offline at any one time. All playlists, online or offline, can be pinned easily to the Windows Phone Start Screen.

Creating A Mix

If you’re a picky playlist curator like myself, then you may want to rock a custom playlist. You can do this by selecting ‘Create A Mix’ from within the Mix Radio section. 

Contrary to rival services, here you can add up to THREE artists from which to form the Custom Radio station, which beautifully narrows down the list to ensure you get just what you want.

If you create a playlist using Green Day, The Offspring and New Found Glory, you’re sure to get an almighty selection of the world’s finest pop-punk. 

All of the Custom Radio stations you create can be shared to social networks or via email. 

Getting Personal

Another neat feature of Mix Radio is the ability to create a personal music profile, which divides you up into neat percentages based on the genres of music you most enjoy. 

Select the Personalize section of Mix Radio to examine your listening history or even scan your music library in order to create the profile (for example 27 per cent Rock, 33 per cent pop, 20 per cent soul and 20 per cent R&B) and then you can easily create a Custom Station based on your profile.

Forever yours

Beyond the Mix Radio magic, there’s also a built-in music store, allowing you to permanently own a digital copy of each of the 17 million songs you may hear while listening to playlists.

Going to the show

Nokia Music is, naturally, fully integrated with Nokia Maps, allowing you to search for concerts near to you through the Gigs Finder section on the main menu. Hitting this option will identify shows going on within your vicinity. If your choice isn’t listed, simply choose the search option. 

Clicking on a show will allow you to buy tickets directly from within the app, from a range of online outlets. You can even get directions to the venue using Nokia Maps
